HEALDSBURG. Nestled in downtown Healdsburg, this open-air charmer has been a Sonoma Valley staple since the 1920s. As such, it ensures that locals and occasional tourists are well fed with a steady supply of lemon curd tarts, raspberry chocolate tortes, and scintillating strawberry-rhubarb pies. If a guilty conscience aims to ward off the idea of "dessert for lunch," never fear: Costeaux serves from-scratch soups, muffuletta sandwiches, and salads. Just be sure to save room for dessert! HEALDSBURG. The place also prepares a variety of gourmet coffees and teas (perfect complements to any sweet dish). SANTA ROSA. This bustling sidewalk bistro is a hit with locals thanks to its family-friendly vibe and delicious food served in sensible portions. Opt for a seat outside, weather permitting, and dig into dishes like prawn cappellini, pear bruschetta with mascarpone and gorgonzola, and center-cut short ribs braised in red wine. Early-birds love the breakfast choices, many of which are made with organic eggs, including a veggie scramble with mushrooms, spinach, tomatoes, caramelized onions, and mozzarella.

SONOMA. Portuguese delights await at chef-owner Manuel Azevedo's charming casa, located just north of downtown Sonoma. The restaurant, named in honor of Azevedo's mother, captures the spirit of his native Sao Jorge (in the Azores). Vibrant folk music plays in the background, colorful artwork adorns the walls, and a fascinating wine list includes a handful of Portuguese labels. Featured main dishes include Camarao a Mozambique (piri-piri-seasoned prawns served in tomato-peanut sauce) and Feijoada Completa (stewed beef, pork, sausage, and black beans with rice and collards).
